Raila attended school at Kisumu union primary school, then Maranda primary school, and later joined Maranda high school where he completed his secondary education in 1962. He later spent two years at Herder institute which is a philological faculty at the University of Leipzig in East Germany. In 1965, Raila received a scholarship to Technical School, Magdeburg, Which is now a part of Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg. In 1970, he graduated with a master of science(MSc) in Mechanical Engineering.

Raila married a lady by name Ida Oyoo in 1st September 1973. Thereafter, got four children who are the late Fidel Castrol, rosemary Akeyo, Raila Junior, and Winnie Irmgard. All the children ventured into business.

Career.

After graduating and returning to Kenya in 1970, Raila became a lecturer at The University of Nairobi. In 1974, he left The university and started working at the Kenya Bureau of Standards as a manager. However, he was promoted to deputy director after four years. Thereafter, Raila was imprisoned after being accused of collaborating with the plotter of a failed coup against the president in 1982. Therefore, he served a six years imprisonment term up to 1988. When Raila left prison, they accused him of taking part in activists’ actions to fight for multi-party freedom. Therefore, Raila went to prison again. He left prison in June 1989 whereby, he still went back to prison for another year up to 1991. The government had some threats on assassinating Raila. Therefore, he found it better to leave the country due to his fears. He returned to Kenya in 1992.

Raila has run for the presidency three times without success. That is in the 1997, 2007 and, 2013 general elections.

From 2001-to 2002, he served on the cabinet of president Moi as the minister for energy. Later in 2002, he was appointed minister of roads, public works, and housing. In the year 2005, the president dismissed the entire cabinet. So, Raila went his way and formed the Orange Democratic Movement, the party he ran for the presidency in 2007. Nevertheless, Raila became the prime minister of Kenya on April 17 2008 after losing the 2007 presidential elections.
