Egerton University

Egerton University is located in Njoro, about 25 kilometers from Nakuru town. It is the oldest higher learning institution in Kenya. So, the institution was started as a Farm School in the year 1939 by a British national from Tatton known as Lord Maurice Egerton. He had come and settled in the country the 1920s. In the year 1950, the institution got an upgrade to an Agricultural College that would offer diploma programs.

Its history

Therefore, the Egerton Agricultural College’s ceremony was conducted in the year 1955. However, in 1979, the Government of Kenya, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) participated in funding its expansion to a major institution. The college was gazetted in 1986 as a constituent of the University of Nairobi. In the year that followed, that is 1987,  the establishment of Egerton University through an Act of Parliament was revoked. It was replaced by Universities Act No. 42 of 2012 and chartered again in the year 2013.

So, the main campus accommodates the Faculties of Agriculture, Arts and Social Sciences, Education and Community Studies, and Veterinary Medicine & Surgery. Engineering and Technology, Environment and Resources Development, Science.

Also, there are two academic directorates, that is the College of Open and Distance Learning and the Institute of Gender and Women Development Studies. The main campus in Njoro also accommodates the Board of Undergraduate Studies and Field Attachment and the Board of Postgraduate Studies. Their town Campus College in Nakuru has got the Faculties of Commerce and Health Sciences.
