Monkeypox is a viral disease caused by the Variola virus which is in the same group of viruses as the smallpox disease. The signs and symptoms are not as much intense as those of smallpox.
Signs and Symptoms of Monkeypox.
Below are the most common signs and symptoms of Monkeypox. These symptoms vary from person to person. Some people experience all the symptoms while others do not.
- An itchy rash that appears on the genitalia area, hands, feet, chest area, and the face.
- A high rise in a person’s temperature is also known as a high fever.
- Lymph glands are often swollen.
- Feeling tired.
- Body aches, especially in the muscles and back area.
- A persistent headache.
- A dry cough with some running nose.
Monkeypox Preventive Measures
The following are preventive measures you may take to minimize the spread of the Variola virus.
- Abstaining from sex with the affected person until they are virus free.
- Always wear a mask when out in a crowd as the virus easily spreads.
- Skin-to-skin contact with individuals should be highly discouraged.
- Avoid sharing personal effects such as towels and personal clothing together with utensils with another person.
- Ensure that after visiting the washrooms, you clean your hands thoroughly with water and soap. In the absence of soap and water, ensure you use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Treatment
Monkeypox cannot be fully treated but there are ways of minimizing the viral loads in the human body. So, this can be done through vaccination against the virus. The same vaccine administered to smallpox patients is what is used for Monkeypox disease.
The disease takes 2-4 weeks to clear from the body and rashes are unseen. Pain relieving medicines are prescribed to ease the pain that may arise from itchy rashes on the human body.
Patients with Monkeypox virus should be isolated till the results tests negative. This minimizes the spread to other people.
