Education is a key driver to growth and development in any country. And as such, Kenya has positioned itself in higher education to offer globally competitive education. There are two options public and private universities. A private university means that the institution is not owned or funded by the government. Private universities in Kenya must follow commission for University Education (CUE) guideline for their accreditation. They are owned by individuals or organizations. These institutions offer diverse education programmes. The list of private universities have increased from one to more than 26. Below is a list of popular private universities in Kenya.

United States International University (USIU)-Africa

USIU pioneered private university in Kenya. In 1970, USIU signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Kenya to offer business programs and any other degree programs were not being offered by the public universities.

The university campus is located in the Roysambu near Kasarani suburb of Nairobi.

Strathmore University

Strathmore University is an accredited by commission of university education. It is non-profit higher learning institution founded in 2002. Its main campus is located along Ole Sangale Road, off Langata Road, in Madaraka Estate, Nairobi, Kenya.

Mount Kenya University (MKU)

Mount Kenya University is a Chartered University in Kenya. Its main campus is found in Thika town along General Kago road.

Catholic University of Eastern Africa

Like other private universities in Kenya , Catholic University of Eastern Africa started in a modest way. Catholic University of Eastern Africa begun as graduate school of theology then known as the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa (CHIEA).

Its main campus is found at Lang’ata, Nairobi, Kenya.

Africa Nazarene University (ANU)

Africa Nazarene University was established in 1994 and has grown to its current state.
