Lady Justice Martha Koome is a Kenyan advocate and Human Rights Defender serving as the Chief Justice of Kenya since 21 May 2021. She was born in 1960 in Kithiu village in Meru. She is the Chief Justice of Kenya and the president of the supreme court of Kenya. However, she was a practicing judge at the court of Appeal in Kenya until 27 April 2021. She is the first woman to serve as Chief Justice in Kenya. In addition, she has an aggregate of 33 years of experience in the legal profession.


Justice Martha Koome was born in 1952 at Kithiru village in Meru County. She is 69 years of age as of 2021.

Lady Justice Martha Koomes’ Education.

After she completed her high school education, she joined the University of Nairobi for a bachelor’s degree in law. She graduated in 1986. However, she proceeded to the Kenya School of Law, where she pursued and attained a postgraduate diploma in law in 1987. However, she holds an LL.M. from the University of London in public international law. She earned a master’s degree in Public International Law from the University of London in 2010.


Lady Justice Martha Koome is happily married to her husband Koome Kiragu. Together, they are blessed with three children namely: Kelvin Koome, Nkirote Koome, and Kagwira Koome.

In her private practice, she ran a successful firm and specialized in gender rights practice. Martha Koome has previously served as the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association’s Chairperson accredited to her exemplary leadership and legal prowess. However, her legal career continues to flourish with her new victory in heading Kenya’s Legal System, in the position of Chief Justice. She is the first lady president holding much promise and admiration to younger girls and women in the country.
