Roat had a long career that spanned nearly half a century. He was a character actor who had over 130 credits to his name, including Seinfeld, Friends, Dallas and Hawaii Five-O. Other hit shows he appeared on included Columbo, Kojak, Charlie’s Angels, and Happy Days.

In 1965 he appeared on an episode of The Fugitive and became an active member of the acting industry in the decades that followed. In the latter years of his career, Richard’s credits included ’90s shows such as 3rd Rock from the Sun, Ellen, Mad About You, and 7th Heaven. He also featured on Hart to Hart, Blossom, Baywatch, and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

His performance on Seinfeld is perhaps one he’ll be best remembered for. He was one of the doctors who found Julia Louis-Dreyfus ‘ character, Elaine Benes, to be a “difficult patient” in an episode in season eight in 1998. In Friends in 2000, he appeared as a professor colleague of David Schwimmer’s character Ross. In the episode, he busted Ross for dating a student.
