Waikiki is a neighborhood and beach located on south shore of the O’ahu island in United States of Hawaii. However, it is a place where people come to relax and play. The beach is almost all man made. High-rise hotels in Waikiki were constructed in about 1956,these include: Sheraton Prince Kaiulani Hotel and Waikiki Biltmore. Between 1920s and 1970s there was importation of sand from Manhattan Beach, California by boat and barge to replenish 1,730 feet shoreline due to erosion.

First FINA World Open Water Swimming Champion took place in the waters of the Waikiki Beach from October 29,2000 to November 4. Therefore, the project of the remaining restoration of the beach took place in spring of 2012. However, the sand was imported from nearby shores. The project widened the beach by close to 37 feet restoring the beach to its 1985 feet shoreline.

Due to development of the shoreline by humans, Waikiki has eight distinct beaches which include Duke Kahanamoku ,Royal Hawaiian,Halekulani, kuhio Beach, Kapi’olani Beach, Ft. DeRussy Beach,Queens Beach and Kaimana Beach.

Main thoroughfare in Waikiki is Kalakaua Avenue with;

There is another main thoroughfare known as Kuhio Avenue famous for its restaurants, cafes, clubs, nightlife, prostitution and grocers.

Activities

So, in the beach, longboard surfing is the best activity. This is where it is acclaimed father of ,modern surfing lived in early 1900s. A statue made of bronze of Duke Kahanamoku is found on Kuhio Beach as a tribute to the master of surfing and 1900s Olympic medals for swimming winner who spread the word about surfing internationally. Additionally, at night there are gigantic party and nightlife with every form of entertainment one would choose.
