Damon Matson Career
In 2015, Matson was awarded the NOAA Hollings Scholarship while still in school, conducting weather communications research for a summer with the National Weather Service in New Orleans as a Well-versed in the science of meteorology. He is an active member of the National Weather Association and American Meteorological Society, and he was recently granted the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist Seal from the AMS in November 2021.
Matson started his broadcasting career during his tenure at graduate school, where he covered the weather on the weekends at WTOK in Meridian, MS for two years. He was born and rasied in western Pennsylvania, he graduated from Brockway Area High School before getting his bachelor’s in meteorology from the California University of Pennsylvania and then his master’s degree in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University.
Prior to arriving in the DMV, he worked for two years as a weekend meteorologist/reporter at WBNG in Binghamton, NY. While covering the various forms of weather in the Southern Tier, he was awarded the 2019 Outstanding Weathercast Award from the New York State Broadcasters Association.
Additionally, Matson has been a mentor to young, aspiring journalists and meteorologists, and having grown up in a big family he knows how important it is to be a part of the community.
