Charley was born on March 18, 1934, in Sledge, Mississippi. He comes from a humble family with 10 siblings. Charley’s father was a poor sharecropper. However, details about the family are not publicly available.

Pride started as a baseball player. He played for Negro American League in 1952, pitching for the Memphis Red Sox, Louisville Clippers, Boise Yankees, and Birmingham Black Barons. However, during traveling his team bus was his music practice studio. He sang and played his guitar as he journeyed for team activities.

Music career

Although Pride realized his baseball dreams, he ventured into his country music career in 1962. During his first audition in 1963, his mentor Jack Johnson was impressed.

Johnson later introduced Pride to Jack Clement. Together with Jack Clement, Pride recorded his demonstration recordings at RCA’s Nashville studio. His recording was impressive and made him get approval to get into label brass.

In 1966, Charley Pride released his first single country music song, “Snakes Crawl at Night.” However, the DJs did not have access to this until his third single, “Just Between You and Me” ranked in the top 10 country music.

A lot of his fans were surprised to know he was black. This was after seeing his photo on his cover album. Interestingly, they asked him why he does not sound like he is black.

“Charley, how’d you get into country music, and why you don’t sound like you’re supposed to sound?” Charley confessed to being asked this question during one of his concerts in 1965.
