John Barrowman whose real name John Scot Barrowman, is a Scottish-American actor, singer, presenter and author. He is widely known for his audio show on CBBC’s Tonight the Night and for his role as Captain Jack Harkness in Dr. Who and Torchwood in The Making of Wisdom.


 However, he was born on March 11, 1967 in Glasgow, Scotland. Therefore, he is 57 years old.

He studied management professions at the United States International University in San Diego. His high school teacher encouraged him to start playing sports.


However, he is the son of Marion Barrowman and John Barrowman. He is the last child in a family of three children. His mother was a singer and worked as a record saleswoman. Additionally, his father was employed by ministerial heavyweight Caterpillar in Uddingston. In the year 1975, his father’s business moved the family to the United States where he operated a light tracked tractor in Illinois, USA.

His career began in London’s West End in 1989 when he played the role of Billy Crocker in Cole Porter’s Everything Goes at the Prince Edward Theatre. John took as Reno Sweeney and Bernard Cribbins in the role of Moonface Martin. He continued to appear in West End products over the next decade. He played the lead role of Domingo Hernandez in Matador at the Queen’s Theater in 1991. Also, he played as:

  • Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theater in 1992.
  • Claude in Hair at the Old Vic Theater in 1993.
  • Chris in Miss Saigon at the Theater Royal.
  • Drury Lane in 1993.
  • Joe Gillis in Sunset Boulevard at the Adelphi Theater from 1994 to 1995.
  • Beast in Beauty and the Beast at the Dominion Theater in 1999.

Moreover, he appeared in the 1994 musical Godspell and was a soloist on two songs:

  • “We Beseech Thee” and “On The Willows.”
  • He was the featured voice of Strike Up the Band on Who Could Ask for Which More?

He celebrated Ira Gershwin at the Royal Albert Hall in 1996 and in 1998 he was nominated for the Olivier Award for Best Stylish Actor in a Musical for his role as Cal Chandler in The Fix. This performance he repeated in Cameron Mackintosh’s 1998 musical Feast Hey, Mister Patron! Also, John played Joe Gillis in Sunset Boulevard in the West End and briefly on Broadway. His only Broadway appearance is the role of Barry in Stephen Sondheim’s revue Putting It Together (1999–2000). In his review of Putting It Together, theater critic Tom Samiljan noted his “magnificent baritone voice and sophisticated aesthetic. “In 2002, he appeared as Bobby in Sondheim’s Company at the Stephen Sondheim Celebration at the Kennedy Center.
