Dr. William Samoei Ruto, who is also William Kipchirchir Samoei arap (son of) Ruto is the first and current serving Deputy President of Kenya under the 2010 constitution. Additionally, he acted as an acting president from October 6 to 8 October 2014 when President Uhuru Kenyatta was at the International Criminal Court (ICC), in The Hague, Netherlands.

He is a famous politician who has risen from a roadside chicken seller to the second top job in Kenya. The rise has not been so smooth. Read on to know more about William Samoei Ruto.

The early life of William Samoei Ruto.

On December 21, 1966, William Ruto was born in Sambut village, Kamagut, Uasin Gishu County to Daniel Cheruiyot and Sarah Cheruiyot. Ruto comes from a humble family that had little means. To help his parents, he engaged in roadside hawking of chicken and groundnuts along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

Upon graduating from the University of Nairobi, William Ruto started his public service as a teacher at Sirgoi and Kamagut Secondary Schools before entering politics.

Previous Held Senior Public Positions

Dr. William Ruto has held senior positions in Kenya. The latest position was the Deputy President from 2013 to 2022.

Before ascending to the second top seat in Kenya, Ruto served as a minister in the ministries of Home Affairs, Agriculture, and Higher Education Science and Technology. He also served as Assistant Minister in the Office of the President under President Daniel Arap Moi in 1998.

During his term as a member of Parliament of Eldoret North Constituency, he was appointed the chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Constitutional Reform in the 9th Parliament.

Education

Dr. William Ruto started his education at Kerotet Primary School for his primary school education then joined Wareng Secondary School for his Ordinary Levels education. He later proceeded to Kapsabet Boys High School in Nandi County for his Advanced Levels.

Ruto joined the University of Nairobi and graduated with BSc (Botany and Zoology) in 1990. He enrolled for MSc. in Plant Ecology at the same university where he graduated in 2011. His education journey did not end at MSc. level. In 2018, William graduated with a Ph.D. His doctoral thesis is titled: Influence of human activities on land-use changes on the environmental quality of riparian ecosystems: A case study of Saiwa Swamp watershed, Western Kenya.

In addition to studying, Ruto was a dedicated Christian union (CU) member at University. He chaired the CU and CU Choir.

Politics

Ruto’s chairmanship at the Christian union must have mentored him in politics. His political career began as a youth organizer at the Youth for Kanu ’92 movement (YK 92). Ruto served as a treasurer at YK 92. Following notorious acts, YK 92 was disbanded in 1992. In spite of this, Ruto would not give up on politics. In 1997, he vied for Eldoret North constituency beating a veteran Reuben Chesire. He served as an MP from 1997 to 2013.

Together with President Uhuru Kenyatta, Ruto dared for the presidency. However, he was an active running mate of president Uhuru Kenyatta. The dual won the election despite having an International Criminal Court case. As a result of their win, Ruto is the Deputy President of Kenya (2013 to 2022).

Political Party Affiliations

Additionally, Ruto has had a diverse political affiliation since YK 92. His first affiliation was the then ruling political party, KANU. His relationship with the party lasted from 1992 to 2007. However, his relationship with KANU got bitter following his condemnation by KANU after his public declaration to vie for president in 2006. As a result Ruto sort for a nomination at orange Democratic Party (ODM) in 2007. Although he did not get nominated for president by ODM, Ruto remained a fierce supporter and member of ODM.

In 2011, Ruto and Uhuru formed Jubilee political party. It is through this party that Ruto rose to Deputy President. In his presidential bid, Ruto formed United Democratic Association (UDA).

William Ruto is married to  Rachel Chebet in 1991. Their first child is Nick Ruto. They now have a total of 9 children.  His daughter June Ruto was married to a Nigerian prince Dr. Alexander Ezanagu at his Karen residence in Nairobi.

Net Worth

As a deputy president, Ruto is entitled to a monthly pay of between Ksh1.05 million and Ksh1.4 million, putting his annual pay at Ksh16.8 million but his asset net worth is not revealed.
