Mwangi Kiunjuri, who is Festus Mwangi Kiunjuri was born in April 29, 1969 in Kenju village, Muranga County. He is a veteran politician who has held various political offices with the most recent being the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture. Being a vocal Mount Kenya politician, Kiunjuri will play a major role in the 2022 general elections. He has a political party called the Service Party of Kenya (TSP). Mwangi Kiunjuri background

Kiunjuri was born in a humble family on April 29, 1969. He is the 11th born in a family of 12. His father worked in a dispensary in Kahurura forest as a dresser and his mother was a peasant farmer (housewife). Kiunjuri, just like any other child from a humble background went to local schools and proceeded to Moi University where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in education arts.

His parents could not afford him a pair of shoes. He wore his first pair of shoes in class four. To make ends meet at university, Kiunjuri sold mitumba (second-hand clothes). He has worked as a tout and also sourced vegetables from Kinangop to sell at the Githurai market.

Kiunjuri’s Education

Mwangi Kiunjuri started his education at Kahura primary school and In 1983 -1987 he went to Dr. Kiano Boys school. 1988-1989 he joined Kagema High school.

After completing his high school education he joined Moi University (1990-1994) where he graduated with a bachelor of education (arts). He holds a Global Master in Business Administration from USIU.

Having trained as a teacher, Kiunjuri undertook several teaching jobs. He was employed at  Kangema High School, Dr. Kiano Boys School, and Kiarithaini Secondary School in Mathira, Nyeri county. The young Kiunjuri had an entrepreneurial mind. Using his saving he bought an old lorry and ventured into transport. This opened up an opportunity to have political discussions with Nanyuki town residents. He ditched his teaching job to join politics.

Kiunjuri spent time Nanyuki town bus terminus discussing politics. It is from this terminus that he gained political grounds.

In 1997, Kiunjuri, the youngest elected Laikipia East member of parliament (MP) on a Democratic Party (DP) ticket. He retained his parliamentary seat for three consecutive terms (1997-2002, 2002-2007, and 2007-2013). 2013 he vied for Laikipia county gubernatorial seat.

He lost the seat to his political opponent, Joshua Irungu. President Uhuru appointed him as cabinet secretary ministry of devolution and planning. Other key political positions he has held are assistant minister, public works (2010-2013), Assistant minister of water and irrigation (2008-2010), and assistant minister of energy (2003-2007).

He has been a member of various political parties. Among them are the Democratic Party (1997-2002), National Rainbow Coalition (2002-2007), Party of National Unity (2007-2013), and Grand National Union (2013- ). In political party leadership, he has been the party leader for the Grand National Union (2013) and the Service Party of Kenya (current).
