In 1989, he got his first job as a head coach at the University of Akron. He successfully led the team to the NCAA Tournament in 1989 and 1991.

Afterward, he went coach at the University of Cincinnati in the year 1989. He worked with the Bearcats for 16 seasons, from 1989 to 2005. During this time, the team managed to reach the NCAA Tournament 14 times and made the Final Four in 1992.

In 2005, he became the head coach at his alma mater, West Virginia University. Under his leadership, the Mountaineers got very successful. They got to the NCAA Tournament several times, which included a trip to the Final Four in 2010.
