Who is Mwai Kibaki, origin, and family?

Mwai Kibaki

Mwai Kibaki, whose real name is Emilio Stanley Mwai Kibaki was born on 15th November 1931, at a place called Gatuyaini village in Othaya division in Nyeri county. However, he was a politician and the third president of Kenya. He was the youngest son in a family of eight to the late Kibaki Githinji and Teresia Wanjiku.

Kibaki attended Gatuyaini school for 2years, Karima mission school for 3years, and Mathira boarding primary school between 1944 to 1946. Kibaki later joined Mang’u high school between 1947 and 1950. After doing well in his O levels, he joined Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda where he studied economics, history, and political science. When studying, he was elected the chairman of the students’ association. Kibaki graduated in 1955 achieving the award of the best student in his class. Therefore, he was awarded a scholarship to further his studies in the United Kingdom.

Family.

Kibaki was married to the late lucy in 1961 and both got four children namely; Judy Wanjiku, Jimmy Kibaki, David Kagai, and Tony Githinji.

Career.

Kibaki wanted to join the army. In his final years in Mang’u, he was inspired by the veterans of the 1st and 2nd world Wars. However, his dream was cut short by the ruling made by Walter Coutts, who was the chief colonial secretary. The ruling barred Kikuyus, Embus, and Merus from joining the military. Therefore, Kibaki remained with one dream.

Kibaki joined active politics in 1960. It was when Jaramogi Odinga requested him to quit his role at Makerere and returned to Kenya where he took up as an executive officer in KANU. Moreover, he helped in drafting the first constitution while in that position.

Kibaki was elected Mp for the Donholm constituency in Nairobi in 1963. In the same year, he was appointed the permanent secretary (Ps) of the Treasury and later an assistant minister in the ministry of finance. Also, between 1969 and 1982, he became the minister of finance and economic planning. In 1974, Kibaki considered going to his local home to seek re-election where he was elected. It was after Donholm’s seat became too competitive. So, he served between 1974 and 2012.

Leadership.

Kibaki also became the vice president of Kenya in i1978 under the leadership of President Moi However, Kibaki decided to awake multiparty politics in 1991. Therefore, he resigned from KANU and became an opposition leader. After his resignation, he formed the Democratic Party(DP). In 1992, he registered as a candidate and came 3rd. He also vied in 1997 when he became 2nd.

In 2002, a rebellion broke out in KANU and many leaders quit the party. Kibaki also quit and formed National Alliance Kenya(NAK) which later became National Rainbow Coalition(NARC). Moreover, he vied as president of Kenyan 2002, winning with over 62% votes, and was also re-elected in 2007.
