History of Machakos Technical for the blind

It is a government institution. The institution was started in the year 1958 to provide skills to people who were affected by war. By then, it was being sponsored by the Royal Commonwealth Society for the blind. Also, their local partner Kenya Society for the Blind took part. However, the initial plan was to serve male trainees only. They were taken through orientation and mobility process, use of braille, handicraft, and operating telephones as their courses.

In the year 1987, they let the first female students join the school. In addition, they introduced some other courses that were not there before such as knitting & garment. They began artisan training in the year1994. In 1997, the institution was upgraded and become the only Technical Training Institution in East & Central Africa that was offering Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC)) Craft courses for the visually impaired.
